Trennbare Verben vs Untrennbare Verben

When to Use

Separable prefixes (an, auf, aus, ein, mit, vor, zu, etc.) split from the verb in main clauses and are stressed. Inseparable prefixes (be, er, ver, zer, ent, emp, ge, miss) never separate and the verb stem is stressed. In Partizip II: separable gets -ge- between prefix and stem (aufgestanden), inseparable has no -ge- (verstanden).

Tips

Listen to the stress! If the prefix is stressed → separable. If the stem is stressed → inseparable.

Memorize 'BEER VEZ GEM' for inseparable: Be, Er, Ver, Zer, Ent, Ge, Miss.

Some prefixes (um, über, unter, durch) can be both! umFAHren (to run over) vs UMfahren (to drive around).
