Usage Tips

'versprechen' also means 'to misspeak' (sich versprechen): 'Ich habe mich versprochen' = I made a slip of the tongue. Context determines meaning.

Takes Dativ person + Akkusativ thing: 'Ich verspreche dir etwas' (I promise you something). Or with 'zu + Infinitiv': 'Ich verspreche, pünktlich zu sein'.

Common Mistakes

Adding 'ge-': 'Er hat geversprochen'

Fix: No 'ge-' with 'ver-': 'Er hat versprochen'
