When to Use
German has 3 grammatical genders. Key rules by ending: -ung/-keit/-heit/-schaft → die (feminine), -er/-ling/-ist/-ismus → der (masculine), -chen/-lein/-ment/-um → das (neuter). Semantic rules: days/months/seasons → der, metals/colors as nouns → das. Many exceptions exist, so always learn nouns with their article.
