German native words stress the first syllable (ARbeiten, MUTter). Foreign words vary (telefoNIEren, UniverSITÄT). Separable verbs stress the prefix (ANrufen, AUFstehen). Inseparable prefixes are unstressed (verSTEhen, beSUchen). Compound words stress the first element (HAUSaufgabe).
